Veterans Day

Veterans Day-clicl to enlarge Veterans Day in USA is Remembrance Day in other countries;
a time to remember those service men who gave their lives for our freedom.
Veterans Day was established in 1919 following WWI when many
of our soldiers lost their lives in foreign lands fighting the "Great War".
The cemetery image is Flanders Field where 368 Americans were laid to rest.
The poem "In Flanders Field" was penned by Lt. Col. John McCrae in 1915.
Please take time this week to remember our fallen warriors from all conflicts
and reflect on the freedoms they have protected.
God Bless America!

Autumn in Pennsylvania

This is a painting by Thomas Moran painted in 1864 and depicts Cresham Glen on the
Wissahickon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The area has been preserved but the city has grown up around it so things have changed
along the Wissahickon since he completed this work.
I really miss Pennsylvania this time of year because of the vibrant autumn colors that we don't have on the southern coastal plain.
This is a large desktop and can be saved to your computer by clicking on the image;
if you need a standard size you will find that here
I hope you enjoy the colors in this painting as much as I.

Misted Seagulls

Misted Seagulls-click to enlarge I love seagulls and especially their songs.
We always vacationed at the beach and when I awoke the first morning
to the sound of gulls I knew I was "home".
We now live near the coast and frequently hear the gulls out on the sound.
The picture was found in the public domain; I used a filter on the original to
give the appearance of the mist that rolls in with the ocean.
This is a large size desktop and can be saved to your computer by clicking on the image.
If you need a standard size you'll find that here
The next time you're at the beach stop and listen to the seagulls.

Flag Day

Flag Day-click to enlargeJune 14 is Flag Day in America, a day to commemorate the adoption of the US
flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1777.
The building is the bell tower of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the
Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were adopted and the
place where the Second Continental Congress met from 1775 through 1783.
The bell tower was the original home of the Liberty Bell seen above,
described as an icon of liberty and justice.
This is a large size desktop which should fit on most computers.
Remember the American Flag tomorrow.

Bobwhite

Bobwhite-click to enlarge Our theme for this month is "Birds" and I decided to do a desktop to honor the Bobwhite Quail
that I hear every morning when I sit at my computer.
We hear their "bob-white, bob-bob-white" whistle all summer.
Bobwhite are very elusive ground birds but I've had the pleasure of seeing them
a couple of times foraging in the brush near our house.
The image I used is a public domain sketch with some changes.
This is a large size desktop that you can save by clicking on the image;
if you need a standard size you can download that here

Southern Magnolia

Southern Magnolia-click to enlarge The Southern Magnolia trees are blooming where I live; they are absolutely majestic trees
all by themselves but when in bloom are especially beautiful.
The Magnolia bloom is one of my favorites but unfortunately,
they don't last very long once cut and placed in water.
I've chosen the blossom for my "trees" desktop rather than the entire tree.
This was my father's favorite tree and for that reason is very special to me.
This is a large size desktop and can be saved by clicking on the image;
if you need a standard size you can find that here
I hope you enjoy the beauty of the Magnolia as much as I.
